This is remarkable, she is well worn but from around 1780/1800 we would expect this wear and actually for me it gives this piece authenticity and enhances her story. This I think would have been a study for larger paintings for a wall, a sequence of maybe most than are here as I think they may be to represent months or seasons. I find this piece truly mesmerising I could look at these three women all day long, they are so curious, the more I look at them the more detail I found. She is painted on old canvas and painted in oil, a lovely deconstructed piece.
